In recent years, many departments and institutions have begun to collect data on the career outcomes of their PhD graduates. But knowing the numbers isn't enough, a new study suggests. ScienceCareers

Many Ph.D. students enter graduate school harboring dreams of one day becoming a professor. But a good chunk of those students isn’t aware of the true—relatively low—odds of landing a faculty position, which arguably should be a crucial piece of information to inform career-planning decisions. In recent years,, aiming to be more transparent about the career outcomes of their Ph.D. graduates. But

The study, which began in 2017, involved asking 1330 U.S.-based chemistry Ph.D. students at various stages of their programs how likely they thought they were to land a faculty position at a research-intensive university. Some of the students then received data about how many recent Ph.D. graduates from their program had done so; others received no additional information.

Five years after the initial survey, the researchers looked up the first position students held after graduation. Regardless of whether they had received the career outcome data, students were equally likely to have gone on to a postdoc position—the path you’d most expect for those interested in a faculty position.
