It all came down to the foot of Kyle McGuire with two seconds left in the 56th edition of the Mahwah-Ramsey rivalry.
“I’m so happy for these seniors,” Ramsey head coach Adam Baeira added. “Mahwah is having a tremendous season and we knew it would be an even matchup. What better way to end it than on a field goal?”The Rams hit a five-yard run from senior Luca Gemma and had 15 more tacked on thanks to a late hit from the Thunderbirds . Gemma followed it up with a multi-tackle-breaking scamper of 33 yards to bring his team to the Mahwah 10 with 1:51 to go.
“It was a great team win,” Gemma said. “The line did a great job and McGuire had the winning field goal. You never know what can happen in a rivalry game.”Both teams were creative offensively and rolled the dice on fourth downs early and often. Mahwah attempted a fake punt on its own 27 in its first possession after halftime and Ramsey sniffed it out.
Favata normally serves as the backup quarterback, but senior starter Aidan Sweeney suffered an ankle injury in Ramsey’s Week 5 loss to Westwood. The sophomore stepped up on Friday and helped deliver his team its biggest victory of the fall.
