EXCLUSIVE: Harlan Coban, the man behind smash-hit Netflix adaptations like Fool Me Once, talks about working with leading lady Michelle Keegan - and the star she was 'terrified' to do a scene with
He captured the nation’s attention with the Netflix screen adaptation of his thriller, Fool Me Once – and Harlan Coben tells us he’s got plenty more where that came from. The thriller writer has penned an impressive 34 books to date, and has a five-year deal with streaming giant Netflix , with eight of his books already adapted into miniseries and more in progress.
Another actress who made one of Harlan’s roles her own – to worldwide acclaim – is Michelle Keegan, who fronted Fool Me Once as leading lady Maya Stern. “I created Maya, but Michelle Keegan brought her in a different direction. Michelle is fantastic, she’s so hardworking and a wonderful actress,” gushed Harlan.
“I wrote the book a number of years ago and the first person who bought the book to be made into a movie had Recalling the dynamic on set with Joanna, Harlan laughed, “Michelle would come up to me and say, ‘Harlan, you’re going to have me tell Joanna Lumley to f**k off in this scene? Really? I can’t say that to her.’ And Jo was just like, ‘Bring it,’ she was so into it and up for anything. It was hilarious.”
“It was really cool meeting Queen Camilla. I got an invitation and was like, ‘Uh, the Queen has invited me to something.’ It was crazy. I love what she is doing, she has a passion for books and is sharing that. She had scientists at Clarence House giving facts about reading and I give her a lot of credit for that,” says Harlan.
These days, Harlan has over 80 million books in print, with his latest release coming out earlier this month. Think Twice is the story of a man who is wanted for murder, despite having died three years prior to the allegation, leaving his former sports agent Myron Bolitar to figure out the mystery.
