The comet reaches perihelion just beyond Earth’s orbit, at 1.05 Astronomical Units from the Sun. The next perihelion passage for the comet occurs next month on October 12th, 2023. The comet reaches an aphelion of 5.9 AU, just out beyond the orbit of Jupiter in its 6.5 year orbit. We get a favorable appearance of the comet on every second perihelion pass, or once every 13 years.The comet made its closest pass to the Earth for the 212010, just 8 days prior to perihelion at 0.
As is the case with many inner solar system short period comets, the comet’s orbit was captured and shaped by massive Jupiter.magnitude. This apparition isn’t quite as good, as the comet passes 35.5 million miles or 57 million kilometers from the Earth on September 26, just over two weeks prior to reaching perihelion.
