[LISTEN] The intention is to add an additional five aircraft by April next year, so it is quite an aggressive expansion, FlySafair's CFO Kirby_Gordon tells FifiPetersPeters on MarketUpdate. MoneywebNews

Let’s take to the skies right now with FlySafair. They received some good news yesterday. The regulators have given them the thumbs-up to expand their business and expand their wings further into the rest of the continent. So the company will be adding routes like Botswana and Angola and Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia and others to its scheduling. It is looking to add a little bit more further down the track. We’ve got Kirby Gordon, the chief marketing officer at FlySafair, for more on the story.

We will, effectively, but fortunately it’s inbound. So we are expanding quite dramatically. We’re actually operating at 150% of what we did last year in December this year in December. So we’ve really grown the business by one-and-a-half times. That brings us up to a fleet of 25 aircraft. But the intention is to actually add an additional five aircraft by April next year. So it is quite an expansion.

I see that you are waiting for approval on other routes, the likes of Mauritius and Zanzibar. When do you think you may get those? Fifi, that’s absolutely it. That reality is actually true across the route network at the moment. I think the last week and a bit, particularly around the school holidays, saw those sorts of loads and those kinds of constraints into the Eastern Cape [and] all over the country. We are in a situation at the moment where the demand for flights is outstripping the current supply. South Africans are used to a choice of about 1.6 million seats per week on the domestic market.
