Many people were also badly affected by the previous floods earlier this year.

Heavy rains and subsequent floods have left residents of Greens Farm in Port St Johns in the Eastern Cape counting their losses once again.

Some of their belongings have been badly damaged and the residents want the municipality to move them from their current location.Nowinile Nombona’s home was flooded in January. “My three bedroomed house collapsed in January due to the floods and I had to move next door to rent. The house was not yet completed. It’s also leaky. When it rainss, water comes through the roof. It is now wet.”

Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the Port St Johns Municipality, Simthandile Ford, says they are in consultation with the provincial Human Settlements Department. “These disasters are now hitting us every year. We are consulting with them for them to train even the local leaders within the space in terms of how they assist people, how do they escalate these cases from a local level right up until the provincial level whilst we have the mandate of escalating and applying for them for houses.
