Flood advisories have been rescinded for the entirety of Vancouver Island after a strong atmospheric river dumped 'copious,' record-breaking amounts of rain on B.C.'s south coast and interior, according to Environment Canada.

Flood warnings and watches have been rescinded for the entirety of Vancouver Island after a strong atmospheric river dumped “copious,” record-breaking amounts of rain on B.C.’s south coast and interior, according to Environment Canada.says the Kennedy Lake area north of Ucluelet saw a whopping 318 millimetres of rainfall since Friday, the highest level reported B.C.-wide.Data shows several daily rainfall records were also set on Saturday, when the Victoria area saw 40.

The River Forecast Centre says the flood watches issued Sunday for western, central and eastern sections of the Island, as well as the high streamflow advisory for the North Island, have ended as rainfall has eased across the province. “A system of atmospheric rivers has now passed, and rainfall rates have eased across the province,” the centre said in an updated notice Monday. An atmospheric river is a relatively long, narrow region in the atmosphere — like rivers in the sky — that transports most of the water vapour outside of the tropics, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

On Saturday, the West Island, including rivers around Tofino, Bamfield and Port Renfrew, was under a flood warning — the most severe advisory level, issued when rivers have exceeded bankful or are about to, likely resulting in local flooding.“In southwest B.C., including Vancouver Island … river levels have declined following high flows on Saturday and Sunday. Continued declines in streamflow are forecast through the middle of the week,” the centre said Monday.
