Spreadsheets created using Excel or Google Sheets requires complicated, time-consuming workflows to maintain and support for collaborative purposes. Flike is building “GitHub for spreadsheets' to allow for more effective collaboration at scale via automation and version control.
Diving deeper, finance workers often need to gather input from co-workers, which needs to be copied & pasted into the main file. This simple “input-gathering” is very tedious in the status quo. In high-trust teams which collaborate closely, the file owner might send across the whole file to the person she is requesting input from or allow access to the file on a shared drive.
Even though we feel some pull from other use cases and market areas, we decided to start by serving finance teams before turning around and serving these. Our approach is first to make ten users love us rather than 1m like us. Since finance teams are such heavy users, they are also much more willing to spend time discussing their spreadsheet-related problems.
Second, we learned about the importance of having a strong audit trail, meaning that users wanted to have access to older versions and the ability to toggle between them quickly. We hypothesized that because Flike ensures you’re always working on the most up-to-date version, the need for access to previous versions would drastically decline. This was not the case. Part of having an older version in front of you and accessible is the psychological reassurance it gives.
