Jockey picks up a few mounts on exploration trip to former home grounds to see what's available

Flavian Prat flew across the United States on Saturday night with one goal — ride Prince of Monaco to an upset victory in the Grade III Best Pal Stakes at Del Mar.Prince of Monaco finished 4¼ lengths in front of 1-2 favorite Muth to give trainer Bob Baffert a 1-2 finish and a record 10th career win in the Best Pal — a six-furlong dash for 2-year-olds eyeing the Del Mar Futurity on the summer meeting’s final day.

Baffert later said the key to victory might have been the ride Prat had on Baffert’s Elegant one race earlier. Prat had the favored Elegant ahead early in the third race before she fell back and finished fifth.“We knew the other horse was really quick and I was hoping Muth would lay off the pace. But he engaged early. Prat saw what was going on and he took back. I liked the way Price of Monaco responded and he had a good post for it.

“Prince of Monaco was very comfortable out there,” said Prat. “He felt good all the way. I saw the pace was hot and I just waited. He’s a nice colt. And yes, I think he can run farther.” Prat flew in specifically to ride Prince of Monaco in the Best Pal, but was in six other races on the 10-race card.
