A Flash mob will assemble on what would have been the opening night of its much-loved Christmas pantomime
This Saturday, a flash mob event will take place on what would have been the opening day of Oldham Coliseum's legendary Pantomime. The event will be staged outside the legendary theatre as part of a continued effort to save the building, which closed back in March.
A public meeting at the theatre prior to its closure was organised by the performance union Equity and saw 400 people turn out to support the venue – with famous faces including Maxine Peake, Julie Hesmondhalgh and Christopher Biggins all voicing their support. The closure on March 31 resulted in 70 redundancies and the Coliseum being left without a physical home, while plans for a new venue in the town centre’s ‘Cultural Quarter’ will not be completed until 2026.
The letter published back in October was signed by signed by a number of actors, artists and community leaders. Dame Vanessa Redgrave, Sir Ian McKellen and Dame Emma Thompson are just some of the high profile figures who have added their signature to the note which was published in The Stage, and referred to a report commissioned by Oldham Coliseum Trust and conducted by independent surveyors Plann, which stated that the theatre is "not beyond repair".
