Flames name coaching staff with fresh-faces Marc Savard, Dan Lambert yyc
Savard spent one season as an assistant coach with the St. Louis Blues and had no head-coaching experience above minor hockey until the past two seasons, when he took on the post of bench boss for the Ontario Hockey League’s Windsor Spitfires.
Along the way, the Spitfires compiled an 88-35-8-4 regular-season mark for .695 winning percentage under Savard. As well, the club topped the OHL in scoring in both seasons under Savard and also produced back-to-back league-scoring champions in Wyatt Johnston and Matthew Maggio, who both went on to be named the league’s most outstanding player.
From there, the native of St. Boniface, Man., moved onto the pro ranks as an assistant coach in 2015-16 with the Buffalo Sabres and head coach of the American Hockey League’s Rochester Americans — for a 32-41-0-3 mark — before returning the the WHL as bench boss of the Spokane Chiefs for two seasons — from 2017-19 for a combined 81-46-0-13 record.
