MELAKA: The residents of Ayer Keroh New Village say they are thankful for the two Jalur Gemilang gifted to them by the Melaka state government on the eve of National Day.
Village chief Yong Lui Xiang, who had been hunting high and low for more national flags, said everyone wanted to decorate their homes with more flags."We have decorated all 123 houses here with the Jalur Gemilang since August 10, but the villagers kept asking me for extra flags.
"I put in an official request to the state government and was told that the demand for the Jalur Gemilang in new villages in Melaka was overwhelming, so there was a shortage for larger flags," he said on Friday . However, the government decided to give the village two larger flags. Melaka Tengah New Villages development officer Teng Wen Jie was on had to hand the flags to Yong.
The village headman said despite the shortage, he managed to buy a few flags and distributed them to the villagers."I don't intend to give these flags away. It's something special for me and it will be only for me," he said.Meanwhile, Teng said he had distributed 300 over flags to nine new villages within the Melaka Tengah jurisdiction.
"But the demand kept growing since the beginning of August and I was unable to supply to the new villages.Teng added the shortage of Jalur Gemilang also affected the demands from new villages in Jasin and Alor Gajah districts.
