Amelia is just at the beginning of her cladding journey and has yet to discover the lengthy and potentially costly road to freedom. Others have been living and breathing this hell for years and it is taking its toll. “It’s so stressful knowing that you’re living in a flat that’s dangerous,” says 39-year-old Catherine Torrie, who is a volunteer with the UK Cladding Action Group. Catherine initially bought a 25 percent share of her flat in Bethnal Green in London under the shared-ownership scheme.
Other women are delaying having families as the uncertainty of their living and financial arrangements loom large. Sophie Taylor, 32, owns a flat with her husband in Birmingham. An intrusive survey found the flat had HPL cladding . It also had timber and no firebreaks . Sophie and her husband have already received bills amounting to about £10,000. She says being caught in the middle of something of this magnitude has made them reflect on how safe and secure the environment is to have kids.
