“I’d learned enough to call myself ‘MacGyver in the kitchen.’” — Debi Lewis (growthesunshine)

My friend called me, panicking. Her doctor had said she needed to follow an elimination diet to uncover the source of her increasing stomach pain. She was standing in her kitchen, hungry and desperate. “I don’t know what to eat,” she said. “It feels like there’s nothing left.” She’d turned to me because, for nearly a decade, I’d dedicated all of my energy to feeding my daughter, Sammi, who, since birth, had been. Doctors instructed me to put her on a series of restrictive diets to figure out what was going on. At her most restrictive point, she couldn’t eat dairy, soy, eggs, nuts, and wheat and was limited to less than half a gram of fat per meal.

The best way to know what’s safest for an allergic or otherwise restricted guest is by calling ahead and asking how to make them comfortable. If they tell you they’d rather bring their own food, don’t be insulted. You can even ask if they’ll bring something they’d like to share with everyone else. I’ve learned that it’s not that they don’t trust you; they just want to know they’ll be safe without also feeling like a burden.

When Sammi was avoiding dairy, soy, egg, wheat, and nuts, it was a wonderful surprise when my husband’s aunt called us before a gathering and asked if she could makefor Sammi using a bowl and utensils she’d run through the dishwasher. We were thrilled to say yes—and then we offered to bring “Sammi-safe” tortilla chips. The hostess ensured Sammi served herself first so we could avoid cross-contamination and even kept a small amount aside so she could have a second helping later.
