25 years later: Five things to know about a deadly Texas tornado outbreak
This week, Central Texas will mark an anniversary that many wish was never part of the region’s history. In 1997, a series of tornadoes killed 28 people and caused more than $128 million in damage. Here are five things to know about the somber anniversary:
2) One of the twisters was among the most powerful ever recorded, with an F5 rating on the Fujita Scale and wind speeds of at least 261 mph. It touched down in northern Williamson County in mid-afternoon, tearing through a subdivision called Double Creek Estates in the city of Jarrell. 4) Jarrell got the worst of it, with 27 fatalities, 12 other injuries and extensive destruction and damage, including pavement ripped from roadways and homes and businesses leveled to their foundations.
