British and German police have announced there's a new suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann. Here are five reasons why this could be a significant development.
The man — who was not named — was living in the Algarve region in 2007 and is locked up in Germany for sexual offences and drug trafficking.
"Our suspicion also includes the killing of Madeleine," Christian Hoppe of Germany's Federal Criminal Police Office said.British police have interviewed more than 600 people over the disappearance. He said the joint investigation with the Metropolitan Police in London and the Portuguese criminal police had led German authorities to a suspect with previous sexual offences, including against children.An age progressed image of what Madeleine may look like as a 9-year-old was released by police in 2012.
German police said they had received information about the suspect as early as 2013, after Madeleine's parents appeared on a German TV show. The van was used in and around the same area from at least April 2007 until some time after May 2007.
