Fiskars—the Finnish brand behind the world’s most popular scissors—is launching gender neutral gardening clothes.
, a graduate of Aalto University in Espoo, Finland, and the 2017 Hyères Festival prize winner.
Designers have been known to dabble in this area before—Cristóbal Balenciaga created custom-made clothes for Mona von Bismark and Bunny Mellon to garden in—but the Fiskars x Maria Korkeila collaboration takes the idea in a sustainable, and genderless, direction. Made of organic and recycled materials and vegan leather, the capsule is fashionable, functional , and, notes Korkeila, “highly modifiable,” calling out a coat that has a detachable hood, sleeves, and hem.
These are clothes that have one foot planted in the country and one in the city. The designer looked at documentary photographs taken by the Finn Ismo Hölttö in the 1960s, and also borrowed elements from work- and streetwear. As Korkeila studied the DNA of the company, she found the tools to be “streamlined—almost futuristic,” as well as familiar—qualities she carried over into designs which she wanted to be as adaptable as Fiskars’s famous tools.
