A Winslow resident tested positive for West Nile virus last week, the Camden County Department of Health said.

A Camden County resident who tested positive for West Nile virus this month is the first person in New Jersey to come down with the mosquito-borne illness in 2023.

The case is among the first in the eastern U.S. this year — with single cases in Maryland, West Virginia, South Carolina and two in Georgia, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.“West Nile virus typically affects a small number of New Jersey residents each year, however residents should remain vigilant and watch for symptoms,” said Commissioner Virginia Betteridge, liaison to the Health Department.

Several animals have contracted West Nile virus this year in New Jersey. The CDC has reported cases in Atlantic, Bergen, Camden, Cape May, Hunterdon, Mercer, Somerset and Union counties.
