HALIFAX, N.S. — It almost seems like an impossible dream for film lovers, the idea of eight days of seeing the latest cinema from across the country and around the world on a big screen, enjoyed as a communal audience with filmmakers and performers in attendance for an extra dose of insight into their creation.
“It was 100 per cent inspired by the pandemic, because I think me and everyone else had the end of the world on the brain,” says Hartford, who uses sound effects and colourful drawings to reenact the plagues of Exodus while his characters try to make the most of it. “And I also have 42 years of religious oppression about being a gay man.
You could call it an Altman-esque rom-com, with more emphasis on the off-kilter “com” part of the equation. Halifax filmmaker Tara Thorne makes her feature debut with Compulsus, a thought-proving thriller about Wally , a vigilante who fights back against men who abuse women. Its East Coast premiere is part of FIN Atlantic International Film Festival on Saturday, Sept. 17.
“The whole point of it was that I got to this point in my life, where I was just so angry all the time, and I felt like I needed to express it,” says the filmmaker and Dance Movie singer-songwriter. “It was sort of a now or never moment, just with the timing of the screenwriting workshop that AFCOOP was putting on, and I didn’t have a job and I turned 40, and all these things came together to be like, ‘OK, we’re going to aim for this now.
Shot on a microbudget over 15 days in the middle of a pandemic, Compulsus is vividly shot with dark, kaleidoscopic colour by cinematographer Cecile Holland, and fueled by rage and determination as Wally wages her campaign to let abusers know they will be held accountable.
