When Britain entered the Second World War in 1939, handlers would have preferred the 13-year-old Princess Elizabeth and her sister Margaret to seek safety in Canada. Opting to stay put, Elizabeth conducted her first military inspection at the age of 16, but insisted on joining the women’s branch of the British army upon her 18th birthday. At the insistence of her father, Elizabeth was granted no special privilege and started as a lowly second lieutenant, training as a vehicle mechanic in Surrey.
