“The uncertainty is unacceptable in an emergency response organization. You have to have gear that’s ready to go in a second when you need it,” Perry said. “Obviously, you wouldn’t want an ambulance that doesn’t start or something like that.” Standing more than six feet tall, Perry said he always had to have his head tilted to the side when he was inside the bus. The ceiling in the new trailer is seven-feet-six-inches, so there is plenty of head room for taller volunteers.
The mobile command centre has four workstations and some overflow space for the RCMP or other partner organizations to use if needed. He said the fact that they are now so well supported and equipped is somewhat “mindboggling” to him considering what VSAR had to work with in the past. Perry said the support also comes as recognition of the importance and value of the work VSAR does for the greater community.
EKMHF chairperson and disbursement committee chairperson Sylvia Fullerton said she feels that VSAR provides a very worthwhile service for communities in eastern Kings County, and the Annapolis Valley region. • VSAR president Ashley Perry said the Coldbrook and District Lions Club supports them annually to such an extent that VSAR has also included them on the list of donors who have contributed to the command trailer.
