Water washes over the wharf in Lennox Island in the wake of post-tropical storm Fiona. Chief Darlene Bernard says the reserve is in the process of replacing the wharf and damage from Fiona may speed up this process. Colin MacLean • SaltWire NetworkLENNOX ISLAND, P.E.I. — Post-tropical storm Fiona tore up trees and damaged buildings in every part of Prince Edward Island last week, leaving 95 per cent of Islanders without power.

“I think we were very lucky and very blessed. The Creator absolutely did watch over and keep safe Epekwitk.”Along with power, they’d had gas delivered and had their gas station running. The worst damage was to roofs, siding and trees, Bernard said.Darlene Bernard, Chief of Lennox Island First Nation, answers questions from journalists at the launch of the band’s moderate livelihood fishery.

On a more positive note, the band has been lobbying the federal government to replace the wharf for years, so damage there could help speed things along, Bernard said. “We will launch our Treaty Six fishery the same way as we would before. And with the wharf, I’m not sure what the extent of the damage is, like if it can be dealt with relatively quickly.”On the eastern side of the province, Chief Junior Gould was still running around trying to help keep his community in Scotchfort stay safe when SaltWire called him on Sept. 29. His community still didn’t have electricity, but had been running the Epekwitk Gas Bar — cash only — from a gas generator, he said.

“Great team. Lots more to do. Make sure those generators are away from your home. The fumes are dangerous. EMO crews are all around and will assist as needed. Hopefully I will have an update later this morning on our power,” he posted on Sept. 28. “We will have a good home cooked meal today at 5 p.m. Gas bar is on normal hours and is still cash only. The charging/warming centre is the main office. Contact me directly if needed.
