The ban follows the recommendations of the Cass Review into children's gender services which claimed there were 'gaps in evidence' around the use of the drugs
The First and deputy First Ministers have approved a temporary ban on the sale or supply of so-called "puberty blockers" in Northern Ireland bringing the policy into line with the rest of the UK.
"UK clinical trials will help inform that decision. Meanwhile, NI will cease to be a potential back door to access." In a statement, a Department of Health spokesperson said: "Northern Ireland is now included in the UK Government’s temporary ban on the private sale and supply of puberty-suppressing hormones, known as “puberty blockers”.
Welcoming the move, DUP health spokesperson Diane Dodds said: "Our position on the provision of puberty blockers has been clear and given the lack of long-term evidence of their safety it is right that the most cautious approach is taken. The move here in Northern Ireland and across the United Kingdom is part of a much wider international trend where many countries have been reviewing such provision in light of more detailed scrutiny of their safety and usage.
“Health waiting lists are out-of-control, people can barely see a GP, and yet the Stormont Executive is fixated on the trans community,” he said.
