Peel Region has confirmed its first human case of West Nile Virus of 2022.

Peel Public Health monitors viral activity through 33 mosquito traps set across the region. Trapped mosquitoes are collected and tested weekly from late June to September.

According to the officials, disease activity fluctuates every year depending on rainfall and temperature. “While the overall risk of getting a West Nile Virus infection is lower during the fall months, these cases reinforce the importance of residents protecting themselves against mosquito bites. Before the first frost of fall arrives, residents should remove standing water sources where mosquitoes can breed,” Dr. Nicholas Brandon, Associate Medical Officer of Health at the Region of Peel, said in a press release.
