The literary genre that blends science fiction and Victorian England takes over the Galveston Railroad Museum
Organizers of the first Houston Steampunk Festival in GalvestonNo city is more perfect for a celebration of steampunk than Galveston.
Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction and fantasy that incorporates Victorian England aesthetics with advanced technology. The works of Jules Verne and H. G. Wells are seminal steampunk texts, and the style is popular in novels, movies, anime, and video games. “I think that the magic of steampunk lies in the gadgets,” says Brady. “No matter how much tech we have, the idea of a very gadget-oriented world that is mechanical, not digital, captures our imagination. In our hearts, we love to work with our hands and create things, Steampunk lets us do that without computers.”
The Houston Area Blacksmith Association will be putting on a display of forging while they’re there. Event chairman Darryl Malone credits his love of blacksmithing to a demonstration just like the one that will be a part of the Galveston Steampunk Festival he attended eleven years ago.
