Finland joins NATO, dealing blow to Russia for Ukraine war
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization has a new Nordic member.
Finland had adopted neutrality since its defeat by the Soviet Union during World War II, but it moved to join the alliance after Russia invaded Ukraine last year. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Tuesday that Finland’s membership reflects the alliance’s anti-Russian course and warned that Moscow will respond depending on what weapons NATO allies place there.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg hands over Finland’s accession documents to NATO to Finnish Foreign Affairs Minister Pekka Haavisto.With its accession to membership, Finland is now protected by what Stoltenberg called NATO’s “iron-clad security guarantee,” under which all member countries vow to come to the defense of any ally that comes under attack.
