Franchise’s handling of Josh Primo allegations deserves careful consideration despite...
Dr. Hillary Cauthen, a former team consulting psychologist, has accused ex-Spurs guard Josh Primo of exposing himself to her.SAN ANTONIO — The NBA would love Gregg Popovich to be right. The league already has a franchise in Brooklyn it can count on to turn each day into a new embarrassment. It would be great to have at least one organization in which serious missteps are inconceivable.
It’s also why one part of Popovich’s long, forceful answer Friday night about the Primo situation didn’t quite ring true. When he said anybody who has observed the Spurs over the years should know, “without any doubt whatsoever, no equivocation,” that they would “be on top of” a situation like the one involving Primo? We do not know for sure if Dr.
And this is where it gets tricky for the organization to dismiss Cauthen’s claims. This isn’t a typical story of an athlete being accused of a crime while his team either takes his side or tries to stay neutral. In a statement released by the team Thursday, CEO R.C. Buford said the Spurs “disagree with the accuracy of facts, details and timeline presented” during Cauthen’s press conference with attorney Tony Buzbee. And to be sure, it is possible Cauthen is wrong about some or all of those facts and details. The Spurs waived him, reportedly for offenses similar to the ones Cauthen described in her complaint.
None of this is proof that they ignored Cauthen’s complaints. But all of this lends credence to Cauthen’s claims that Primo exhibited unacceptable behavior.
