Committed to San Antonio, Spurs try to prove the unprovable
Austin would need to build an arena comparable in size to the Spurs’ AT&T Center to even begin to entertain luring an NBA franchise. And Austin just got done opening a new facility to house the Texas Longhorns and other events.Proving a negative isn’t impossible, but it tends to be difficult.
A few hundred years later, the Spurs could have stuck with that approach. After all, they’ve made no relocation-related demands, nor issued any ultimatums, nor even suggested they might not want to be in San Antonio anymore.
The Spurs and coach Gregg Popovich are part of the fabric of San Antonio — as this mural at Rudy’s Seafood shows.Public officials from mayor Ron Nirenberg to county judge Nelson Wolff to county commissioner Tommy Calvert said they were glad to see it, with Nirenberg and Wolff opining that it should put speculation about the franchise’s future home to rest.
Third, it defies logic that any team considering a move would invest $500 million in a performance center and public events space like the one the Spurs just broke ground on at The Rock at La Cantera. This isn’t just a practice facility. And it isn’t in New Braunfels or anywhere on the way to Austin. It’s on the Northwest Side.
