‘Now their children are coming here’: Generations of families among fans of the track, batting cages and beach volleyball courts to be replaced in three-stage redevelopment

Owners of a go-kart track, outdoor batting cages and beach volleyball courts that have been part of Etobicoke’s Centennial Park for generations are trying to save the businesses from what could be their final lap and ball season.

The go-kart track — which he said at 2.6 kilometres is the longest in Canada — opened in 1988 and the batting cages in 2001, so they are well-known to the community. Ethan Mitchell, owner of Diamond Beach, began working at the nine batting cages and eight beach volleyball courts in 2007. It was his first job and allowed him flexibility to pursue an acting career.

Mitchell said his are the last outdoor batting cages in Toronto and customers, as well as people passing by en route to the ball diamonds, are happy about the upgrades coming to the park.
