Married volcanologists Katia and Maurice Krafft were killed in an eruption in 1991, but their romance still smoulders on the screen
They met in 1966, in their early twenties, and by 1970 were married and honeymooning of the Greek island of Santorini – site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history, circa 1600 B.C.
Maurice hated the idea of narrowly categorizing volcanoes, saying each has its own personality. But he allowed that there were two main types, the red and the grey. He described the red as “friendly” and the grey as the ones that will try to kill you.Article content
