Newest from Olivia Wilde is five kilos of good ideas in a 10\u002Dkilo bag

Florence Pugh stars as Alice Chambers, living an idyllic life in what looks to be a brand-new experimental community somewhere in the California desert, circa 1958. Her husband, played by Harry Styles, works for the Victory Project, which seems to own the whole town.Sign up to receive the daily top stories from the National Post, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.

Every morning the men leave their carports, each driving a different classic American car in a rainbow of colours including, of course, teal. They’re working on the “development of progressive materials,” a phrase that means absolutely nothing but occasionally causes earth tremors to shake the town. The women attend dance classes, drink dangerous amounts of cocktails, cook, clean and gossip.

But newcomer Violet seems uncertain and a little out of place, while Margaret is asking questions no one wants to hear. Neighbourhood queen bee Bunny, played by Wilde, tries to keep the others in check, but Alice is growing more and more suspicious of her seemingly placid existence. Hard to say more here without running into spoiler territory, or at least failing the test of discretion above all else.does feature some gorgeous elements of mid-century design, including furniture and architecture – there are scenes at the Kaufmann Desert House and the Volcano House, both California landmarks. And Pugh is certainly a watchable character, her frustration and curiosity mirroring and even driving that of the viewer.

The trouble is that once she starts finding answers, they turn out to be not as big as the questions that led to them. What’s more, after a recent screening for the press, I found myself asking tertiary questions about little details the film seems to have dropped in for no other purpose than atmosphere and perhaps misdirection.is ultimately a puzzle in which not all the pieces fit together neatly, and those that do create a picture you may feel you’ve seen before.
