One major fibre network operator has seen an increase in theft of one particular piece of equipment.

Two of South Africa’s biggest fibre network operators say their biggest crime problems in 2024 have continued to be network vandalism and criminals threatening their staff when they roll out in new areas or try to maintain their networks.During the years of DSL dominance in South Africa, copper line cutting and theft was a major headache for Telkom and its customers.Copper is precious to thieves due to its high scrap value.

Fibre cables not only offer better speeds, capacity, and latency than copper, the materials from which they are made have no resale value and are therefore not attractive to thieves. “The economic circumstances are driving such behaviour, which are complex and often extend beyond the scope of our immediate control.”

Manholes can be made from a wide range of materials, including concrete, cast iron, composites, fibreglass, and plastic.
