A motion of no confidence has led to the removal of Francois du Randt as mayor of Swellendam . The Democratic Alliance (DA) expressed gratitude for the support of the Freedom Front Plus (FF+) in its mayoral candidate. Tertuis Simmers, provincial leader of the DA, noted the FF+ Federal Executive's decision to have their Swellendam councillor, Juan van Schalkwyk, back the DA mayoral candidate, Francois du Randt, in the council vote.
This support, however, comes with a condition: an impartial investigation into allegations made by Councillor van Schalkwyk against Alderman Du Randt. The DA, accepting this condition, also stipulated that allegations against Councillor van Schalkwyk be included in the same investigation. Simmers expressed hope that this will pave the way for stability in Swellendam and allow the municipality to focus on serving its residents. Meanwhile, the FF+'s Wouter Wessels, representing the Federal Management Committee (FMC), stated the party will uphold its coalition obligations with the DA in Swellendam but remains dedicated to clean governance regardless of who holds power. The FF+ has been in a coalition with the DA since 2021. This decision follows Councillor van Schalkwyk's vote in support of the motion of no confidence against Du Randt. The FF+ has appointed a panel to thoroughly investigate this matter, including the relationship between the FF+ and DA in various coalitions. The FMC also resolved that the FF+ will vote for a DA candidate in the upcoming council meeting to elect a new mayor, as stipulated in the coalition agreement. Despite speculation of the FF+ joining forces with the ANC, the party clarified its stance against allowing the ANC to govern Swellendam. Wessels emphasized the FF+'s commitment to combating corruption and mismanagement, demanding a thorough investigation into all allegations of irregularities against Du Randt.
