The veteran Nationalist has repeatedly criticised his party's decision to enter a powersharing agreement with the Greens.
Fergus Ewing has been suspended for a week by the SNP after a string of rebellions against the Scottish Government.
But his support in June for a motion of no confidence in Lorna Slater, the Greens co-leader, finally prompted party bosses to take disciplinary action. Humza Yousaf did not attend the party meeting, which took place in a Scottish Parliament committee room.
