Her large-scale paintings transport viewers to an expansive alternate reality.
Naudline Pierre's 2019 work "Hold On, Hold Tight" is part of the exhibition "What Could Be Has Not Yet Appeared," on view through May 15 at the Dallas Museum of Art.Over the last two years, the people of our nation have experienced social unrest, economic uncertainty and a catastrophic health crisis. The promise of a new future together entails the abolition of the old in hopes of what might be possible, but admittedly isn’t yet assured.
Naudline Pierre's "Guardian " is one of five 2021 paintings in the exhibition, out of a total of nine large-scale artworks., which the DMA recently acquired for its permanent collection, illuminates the possibility of communal care amid precarity. In the composition, the central figure who appears in seven of the nine exhibition paintings is captured in a moment of vulnerability, falling headlong through the canvas.
Pierre’s extensive and determined use of the full-color gradient is the most distinctive formal element in her work, and why you must view these paintings in person. The artist deftly ranges from jewel-toned magentas to absinthe-colored backgrounds in a single composition. In certain moments, the use of complements creates a kind of visual friction. But that’s precisely the point — friction is movement that generates heat, light, power, life.
