In 2015 Shannon McLay, a former Merrill Lynch financial adviser, launched the Financial Gym, a business dedicated to helping people create budgets, eliminate debt, save money and plan for retirement.
Of course, that's still a small fraction of the pie. Women face a significant gender gap when it comes to raising money. Last year female startup founders nationwide attracted 2.8% of more than $130 billion in venture capital—barely more than the 2.2% they landed in 2018. Still, it's good news that last year, according to PitchBook, New York–area female founders raised 25% more dollars in 19% more deals than in 2018. It's a trajectory that has steadily inched upward. The 273 woman-founded companies in the metro area in 2015 raised just $300 million.
Female entrepreneurs are encouraged by the success of Away, Glossier, Rent the Runway, Stitch Fix and other woman-founded companies that have achieved unicorn status. And although women are still just 11% of decision makers at U.S. venture capital firms, according to All Raise—a nonprofit dedicated to increasing the number of female VCs—more women- focused venture funds have come on the scene, at least 50 by a Crain's count.
