Reanne Spitzer and Sultanna Krispil’s abstract show recreates a TikTok feed in a poignant and dark commentary on the social media platform’s effects
A cooking video. A montage of a dog, a baby. Booty-centric dance. Political jargon. Booty-centric dance. Vlog. Makeup tutorial. Dance. Song. Dance. Dance.
If you, too, have felt personally victimized by your TikTok account’s For You Page, you’ll get a lot out of Reanne Spitzer and Sultanna Krispil’s eerie Fringe show. In 50 minutes, Spitzer and Krispil recreate a TikTok feed in real time, alternating between vapid and apathetic takes on the climate crisis and heavily sexualized, highly choreographed dances. It’s not dissimilar to U.S. comedian Bo Burnham’s excellent film “Inside,” and is just as frenetic and powerful.
Spitzer and Krispil cut right to the pulse of zillennial malaise, injecting their dour commentary on the state of the world with dark, biting, sexual humour. Improvised songs are funny and a little aggressive — the performance I attended featured an improvised ballad called “Will You Be My Santa Daddy?,” aimed directly at an audience member in the front row — and the TikTok dances to songs like “About Damn Time” by Lizzo and “WAP” by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion are clean and precise.
The show could use a director, though it’s remarkable what Spitzer and Krispil achieve without one. And I’d wager this project won’t be a hit for audience members who don’t use TikTok. Several folks walked out at the performance I attended. But for me, an active TikTok user with more than a few questions about how the addictive software has injected itself into the everyday lives of both me and my peers, this show cut deep into the belly of generational existential dread. Spitzer and Krispil have a dark horse of a play here, which, with some polishing, could well go on to do bigger things.
