Both teams opted for a 4-3-3 formation with Arsenal naming an unchanged side that beat Brighton 4-2 away just four days ago, while Newcastle made just one change with Callum Wilson returning from illness and Miguel Almiron and Joelinton also starting. Meanwhile Dan Burn won many clashes against Bukayo Saka and captain Kieran Trippier enjoyed his battles with Gabriel Martinelli.
The second half was once a hard-fought battle in midfield though the home team had much of the ball. Arsenal, who were on a run of ten straight league victories at The Emirates, were playing well and getting the ball to the edge of the box on countless occasions but were unable to find that killer pass or touch in the area.
After some lovely intricate build-up, the ball fell to the 22-year-old – who had scored 11 in his last 11 games at The Emirates – and he shot hard and low but his effort was well saved by keeper Nick Pope’s outstretched left leg. Chants of “Eddie, Eddie” rang around the stadium in support but once again Newcastle held firm.
