The U.S. women filed the suit in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California in March 2019, months after the U.S. men's Soccer team failed to qualify for the World Cup in 2018. The U.S. women then went on to dominate the 2019 tournament, culminating with a 2-0 win over the Netherlands that fueled support for their claim that they were undervalued. The crowd cheering the team's victory in France erupted into a chant of"equal pay, equal pay!"
"The WNT [Women's National Team] rejected an offer to be paid under the same pay-to-play structure as the MNT [Men's National Team] and ... the WNT was willing to forgo higher bonuses for other benefits, such as greater base compensation and the guarantee of a higher number of contracted players," Klausner wrote.
