The $100 million in funding is being delivered through the U.S. Department of Agriculture to three Alaskan projects, all of which engaged in a competitive bidding process with similar applicants across the country, according to Julia Hnilicka, Alaska Director for USDA Rural Development.
The federal agency for national volunteerism and national service is in Alaska for the next several days, focusing on rural and Alaskan Native communities.
AmeriCorps CEO Michael Smith spoke at the Center for Native American Youth’s Youth Forum on Monday and toured the Alaska Native Heritage Center. Smith says they have a federal trust responsibility to make sure they're doing more to invest in tribal communities. Smith says he's overwhelmed by the beauty of Alaska and equally inspired by the people.
