SPRINGBROOK, P.E.I. — The federal government is injecting $40 million over two years into the Atlantic Canadian shellfish sector in the wake of Fiona. The ...

The money is meant to help shellfish workers and non-profit organizations with damage repairs, equipment replacement, cleanup, product loss and long-term projects for adaptations against extreme weather.

It will also help industry associations undertake studies to understand the extent of the damage better and develop recovery plans, including using underwater observation technology. The studies can also help with clearing debris. Additionally, businesses in the shellfish sector can apply for eligible costs like the loss or damage of facilities, equipment, product or inventory, clearing natural and man-made debris, reasonable fixed expenses and potential projects to cover additional costs.

Federal officials said full extent of damage to the shellfish industry caused by Fiona may not be known until spring 2023, as some operations started to submerge their equipment at the time of the storm. It has been our privilege to have the trust and support of our East Coast communities for the last 200 years.
