Cattle producers will today learn whether the Commonwealth's decision to ban the live export trade to Indonesia in 2011 was unlawful.

Cattle producers involved in a class action against the Federal Government will today learn whether the 2011 decision to ban the live export trade to Indonesia was unlawful. The Gillard government took the step amid outrage over the horrific treatment of Australian cattle in Indonesian abattoirsThe action by farmers and other businesses affected by the suspension is seeking $600 million in compensation from the Commonwealth.

The lead applicant, Brett Cattle Company, tried to prove that former Labor agriculture minister Joe Ludwig acted with misfeasance and reckless disregard when he temporarily suspended the trade for up to six months. "We couldn't understand how we, how the industry could just be brought to its knees overnight like that.

Trade relationships were strained, exports dropped off and farming families went for almost a year without an income. "They were more worried we were going to fall over and we were suddenly at risk, so their view of our business was affected for more than a year."If the class action succeeds, it could pave the way for hundreds of people to come forward seeking compensation from the Commonwealth.
