The federal government has offered to split the cost of servicing bus routes abandoned by Greyhound, and B.C. will likely take advantage.
B.C. Minister of Transportation Claire Trevena will meet with her federal counterpart on Wednesday to discuss using federal money to cover bus routes that have been without service since Greyhound pulled out of the province last year.
Greyhound pulled out of Western Canada and northern Ontario on Oct. 31, 2018, citing millions of dollars in losses and a 46-per-cent decline in ridership since 2010. In the wake of Greyhound’s departure, the federal government offered to split the cost of addressing gaps on bus routes with provinces on a temporary basis. Garneau said that no provinces have taken him up on the offer to date, but Trevena has expressed interest.
The funding will last until October 2021, and Garneau said in the meantime a national task force is looking at a longer-term solution for inter-city bus travel. “I think the majority of Canadians, and certainly those with children, want to have their children as safe as possible,” Garneau said.
