Fathers becoming more aware of the efforts and costs involved in childcare could have reduced their desire to have children, researchers suggest.

In 2007, the Spanish government introduced a policy which gave most new fathers the opportunity to take two weeks of paternity leave with full pay—a program that has been expanded in the subsequent years.

Furthermore, the partners of these men were also more likely to stay in the workforce, according to the study published in the Journal of Public Economics. Taking this into account, Farré and González propose that becoming more involved in childcare—or even just becoming more aware of the efforts and costs involved—could have made having further children less desirable.

While intriguing, it is important to note that there are limitations to the results of this study, as the authors themselves make clear. Just because the researchers identified these trends, doesn’t mean that the introduction of the paternity leave necessarily caused them.
