In sentencing last month Alexandre Bissonnette for murdering six Muslims at their mosque in Quebec City, the judge noted that the massacre constituted an attack on religious liberty.
Violence visited upon houses of worship is motivated by a mixture of racial , political and cultural hatreds. Regardless, such attacks erode a longstanding principle that sanctuaries should be, well, sanctuaries. This wickedness is spreading. Consider just the last decade. There are many such lists compiled; a fairly concise one was compiled by CTV News.
In March and again in September 2015, ISIL suicide bombers killed 137 and 25 people respectively at mosques in Yemen. The year 2017 was particularly brutal. In June, four people were killed in a bombing of a Shiite mosque in Kabul, Afghanistan. In August, 90 were killed at another Shiite mosque, this time in western Afghanistan. In November, over 300 were murdered in a mosque in the northern Sinai, the worst terror attack in recent Egyptian history.
In 2010, the Our Lady of Salvation Catholic Church in Baghdad was invaded during Sunday Mass by Al Qaeda gunmen who killed 58 people. Two American churches had massacres that seemed not to be motivated by hatred of Christians per se. In June 2015, nine black churchgoers were killed at a black church in Charleston, South Carolina, by a white supremacist. In November 2017, 26 people were killed at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas.
