Roughly one in 200 babies born in Canada today will have congenital cytomegalovirus, a virus that can lead to hearing loss, intellectual disability or vision loss. But with only two provinces screening newborns for CMV, one father is asking other health-care systems to do more.

“We have sick kids and we are choosing not to identify them. We are choosing not to treat them,” he says. “If you catch CMV infection during pregnancy and it’s transmitted to the fetus, it can have significant consequences for the fetus,” Bitnun says. “Most mothers that come to me with a baby that has congenital CMV are surprised that they’ve never heard of CMV,” Bitnun says. “And I think we’ve done a terrible job of advocacy in that sense, as there are simple interventions that will reduce a woman’s risk of acquiring CMV in pregnancy.”
