Texas EquuSearch’s motto is “Lost is not alone.” But much of its success can be boiled down to a different core principle: Never underestimate a good hunch.

Calls are fielded by an intake coordinator, who is assigned one week out of every quarter. This is a 24/7 job — “they take any after-hours calls: evening calls, overnight calls, 5 in the morning calls,” Farris says — and asking the right questions is crucial. The next step for the caller is to fill out a missing person report, after which EquuSearch decides if it has the wherewithal to help.

Search parties can range from two members to closer to 50 or 60; less intensive “recon teams” are also common. Training sessions for new volunteers happen two or three times a year , during which trainees learn how to pack a go bag, proper search attire — snakebite-proof boots, long-sleeve shirts, no shorts — and the difference between human and animal remains. They learn how to recognize signs of autism, dementia and mental illness, and get used to walking around in the woods.

Farris signed up four or five years ago after seeing a search on the news; the reporter invited any interested viewers to help. After being laid off in 2020, she began volunteering in earnest, until “that turned into us volunteering in the office.” Phillips started in 2015 but only went on a handful of searches before “life got in the way.” She returned after retiring from AT&T and attending Rice University’s nonprofit leadership program.
