We recommend in the race for Farmers Branch City Council, District 5.
In the coming years, governing the city will be about balancing the needs of what the city already has against whatever growth may come. For Farmers Branch City Council District 5, we recommend incumbent David Merritt for the task over his opponents Roger Neal and Kyle Burton.Merritt, 59, was first elected in 2021 to represent East and West Brookhaven, Oakbrook, and a few other neighborhoods in the northern part of the city.
Merritt noted in the Voter Guide that there are always more projects than dollars. To tackle these needs, Merritt said he favors developing a long-term plan to put money aside for future infrastructure projects. On public safety, Merritt emphasized that Farmers Branch now has fully staffed police and fire departments, and said the city saw an overall decrease in crime between 2022 and 2023.
Neal, 62, has experience with city government and is a qualified candidate. He has served on the city Planning and Zoning Commission, and is a team leader for Farmers Branch Citizens on Patrol. His approach to financial management was less balanced in our view. Burton, 41, did not respond to the Voter Guide and didn’t interview with us. He does not appear to have much experience with city government.Of the three candidates, Merritt stands the best chance of keeping things running smoothly in the Branch..
