A farmer in Mpumalanga, South Africa, was arrested and later granted bail after allegedly repackaging and distributing expired and rotten food to various retailers.
A farmer was arrested in Charl Cilliers, Mpumalanga, on Wednesday for allegedly repackaging and distributing expired and rotten food intended for human consumption to various retailers. Pieter Johannes Grobler (30) was granted bail of R8 000 after appearing in the Secunda Magistrate’s Court yesterday. According to the Hawks’ spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Magonseni Nkosi, the suspect’s case was postponed to March 27 to allow for further investigations.
The Hawks received information from a reliable source about potential health hazards on the farm. This led to the activation of various role players, including members of the SAPS and Govan Mbeki Local Municipality health inspectors. During a visit to the farm, a horrifying discovery was made: two warehouses equipped with four cold rooms were overflowing with food, including meat, chicken, and dairy products. Tragically, all the recovered food was either rotten or past its expiration date. Nkosi adds that the court also ordered Grobler to report at the Charl Cilliers SAPS every Monday between 08:00 and 18:00. Grobler was further instructed by the court to surrender his travelling documents to the investigating officer until a new order is issued
