Anne Whitehead said difficult decisions had to be made during her time, with the last year being 'demanding and stressful'

A woman who has held a key Lancaster City Council cabinet finance role through a challenging era is saying goodbye to life as a councillor. But she has future plans and doesn’t intend to disappear from local life. Activity with a Lancaster community centre, a recreation ground, music concerts and hill walking are among her ambitions. She has been a Labour councillor for Scotforth since 2015 and a cabinet member with a finance role under various political administrations and leaders.

City council talks are ongoing on other issues, such as future arrangements for museums and The Platform. Many councillors applauded Coun Whitehead at this point, probably recognising the difficult environment she has faced. Moving into politics On becoming active in politics, she said: “I’ve always voted Labour and wanted to get involved with politics after retiring from the university in 2013. I joined the Labour Party around 2014 and got involved with the constituency party. I became the treasurer for the Lancaster and Fleetwood Constituency Labour Party and also got quite involved with work to get Cat Smith elected as MP.

Reflecting on the finance role, she said: “It has got more and more challenging. At council meetings I have blamed government finance, which has been a substantial cause. Balancing the books has been hard but we have tried to do the best for residents, businesses and the district. This has been especially difficult this year, with cuts that are particularly unpalatable.

“Also I’m proud of what we’ve done with Salt Ayre Leisure Centre. We built it up over a period of years and its become the first carbon neutral leisure centre. I’m also proud we’ve got a publicly-owned leisure centre. Her career on statistics began with a focus on agriculture and crop treatments and later shifted to medical and pharmaceutical sectors.
